| | Frequently Asked Questions About Mammograms And The Free Mammogram Voucher Program
Q: I didn't realize breast cancer was so common. Is there anything I can do to protect myself? A: We don't know how to prevent breast cancer...but we DO know how to find it early enough to have an excellent chance to cure it.
Q: How? A: Just follow a simple plan that includes: a mammogram, a breast self-exam (BSE) and an exam by a doctor, nurse or nurse practitioner.
Q: What is a mammogram? A: It's a quick, easy, breast x-ray.
Q: Does it hurt? A: Some women find mammograms a bit uncomfortable, but if you schedule it right after your period, when your breasts aren't tender and you avoid caffeine before, you probably won't be bothered at all. |
Q: I think I would be embarrassed by a breast x-ray. A: It's natural to feel a little shy the first time you have a mammogram. Remember that the only person in the room with you will be the technician, who is almost always a woman.
Q: Are mammograms expensive? A: Mammograms can cost between $55 and $200, unless you have insurance that will cover all or part of the cost.
Q: What if I can't afford it? I don't have health insurance. A: You should call 1-888-MVP-0505 right now to see if you qualify for a FREE mammogram, through the Mammogram Voucher Program (MVP). The Mammogram Voucher Program Coordinator will answer your questions and tell you how to schedule your appointment at one of our many health provider partners in 30 counties. |
Q: What exactly does the MVP do? A: The MVP ensures that woman of all ages, backgrounds and economic circumstances have access to quality diagnostic services. Approximately 5,000 vouchers are given out each year to Pennsylvania women who have neither private nor public funds to pay. The MVP provides a woman with repeated and unlimited diagnostic screening and includes not only mammography, but also more extensive procedures such as sonography, biopsy and surgical consultations when medically indicated. It reimburses FDA accredited facilities for the various procedures, as well as providing reimbursement for consultation, surgery, pathology, anesthesiology, hospital and primary care services
Q: Since the Mammogram Voucher Program (MVP) is free, will the care I receive be as good as a "paying customer"? A: Absolutely. The care you receive will be of the same high quality as anyone else; same doctors, same equipment, same peace of mind.
Q: Do I really need a mammogram? No one in my family ever had breast cancer. A: MOST women who get breast cancer come from families where there is no breast cancer. The greatest risk for developing breast cancer is simply being a woman. So EVERY woman should have regular mammograms. |
